The focus of this volume, a companion to The Facts On File Companion to the American Short Story (2000), "is to provide insight into the wealth and variety of the British version of this favorite American form." It "maps out some of the main strands that have shaped the British short story and novella," beginning with Jane Austen's Love and Friendship, written in1790, when she was 14 years old. The work discusses widely studied writers who have shaped the British short story, such as James Joyce and Katherine Mansfield, in addition to "lost or neglected authors," such as Mary Butts and Margaret Oliphant. More than 450 alphabetically arranged entries by 219 contributors from academic institutions around the world deal with major short stories, novellas, story collections, writers, concepts, terms, themes, genres, and movements. Although geographic coverage encompasses Great Britain, Ireland, and the Commonwealth, selected writers, such as Henry James and Salman Rushdie, are included because of their strong links to Britain and the British short story tradition. Entry length ranges from 2 paragraphs to 3 pages. Story entries provide synopsis and analysis, while those for authors offer biographical information and an overview of works, with emphasis on the short story form. Following the main entries, one finds an extensive and detailed glossary of terms. Like the encyclopedia entries, each glossary definition is accompanied by a brief bibliography. A detailed bibliography lists "the most influential and frequently quoted sources" devoted to the British short story. A list of contributors is followed by the index, which is the only place one finds a complete list of entries. This addition to the publisher's Companion to Literature series is an excellent resource for high-school and college-level students. It provides a research foundation from which to further one's knowledge of the British short story. Harless, Carol Sue
